This usually happens when some of the theme's colours overlap, are you using some custom theme or a default one?

You can also try some other themes besides Gently.

Can you try to select another KDE UI theme and provide a screenshot? It's possible the project is using the wrong colour names and your theme has two similar background and foreground colours, making the text unreadable.
